MY IEEE BACKGROUND

I have led several of the IEEE operating units as an elected candidate during my IEEE volunteer service. Highlights follow:
  • IEEE Fellow, elected in 1975
  • IEEE Board of Directors, 2006, 2004, 2000-01 and 1988-90
  • IEEE Executive Committee, 2006, 2004, 1990
  • IEEE-USA President, 2006
  • Technical Activities Board (TAB) Vice President 2004; TAB Member 2003-05, 1996-97, 1988-89
  • TAB New Directions Technical Committee, 2002; Strategic Planning Committee 2002
  • Division I Director, 2000-01
  • CPMT Society President, 1996-97; CPMT Board of Governors 1991-2002
  • President, IEEE - USA Innovation Institute, 2007
  • Publications Board Vice President 1990
  • Awards Board, Bell Medal, 1990
  • IEEE Finance Committee 1990
  • Division 3 Director (COMSOC)1988-1989
  • US Activities Board, 1989
  • Communications Society Board of Governors, 1981-83; Conference Board Chair, 1981-86

My recent term as President of IEEE-USA (2006) provides an insight into my modus operandi and open leadership approach. At the end of 2005, I commissioned a statistically valid membership survey to determine the needs of our members. Based on the findings, we established a multiyear strategic plan which was easily understood and communicated to the volunteer and member bodies, and used it to guide our policy decisions and actions through 2006. Results included new and improved member services, with a strong emphasis on career-long continuing education; increased support for K-12 education to assure the next generation of high-tech professionals, and the establishment of the Innovation Institute now underway in 2007. Considerable emphasis was placed on new and cooperative relationships with IEEE Regions outside the USA. IEEE-USA worked with Regions 7 and 8 to help establish new member services and supported the IEEE effort to better serve China in Region 10.

LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As a candidate for President, I would work for improved membership benefits and lower membership dues, and continued vigilance to assure our technology leadership in a growing competitive environment. IEEE must keep focused on being a premier membership organization, and serve all its members, globally, at the highest possible level. I would make "Xplore" available to more members as a service by allowing members ten free downloads annually. Further, to encourage global partnerships within the IEEE, I would initiate a member-paid global small-group travel plan, for our members to travel world-wide, and meet coincidentally with IEEE sections in Regions 1-8.
